A T-shirt may look perfect in a product photo and still disappoint after one wash.
Fabric quality, GSM, colour and printing are important, but stitching is what keeps the garment together. For clothing brands, retailers, corporate buyers and anyone ordering customised T-shirts in bulk, a proper T-shirt stitching quality check can catch weak seams, wavy hems, skipped stitches and poor finishing before the order reaches customers.
The good news is that you don’t need a garment-testing laboratory for the first level of inspection. A flat table, good light, a ruler and an approved sample are enough to spot many common T-shirt seam defects.

How can you check T-shirt stitching quality?
For a quick T-shirt stitching quality check, lay the garment flat, inspect it from the outside and then turn it completely inside out.
Follow every major seam with your eyes and fingers. Finally, gently stretch the important seams to see how they behave.
Your basic checklist should cover:

Look for skipped stitches and broken stitches
Skipped stitching is one of the most important T-shirt seam defects to identify.
A skipped stitch occurs when the required stitch formation fails at one or more points. Instead of a continuous secure seam, you will see a gap or an incorrectly formed section.
With knitted jersey fabric, skipped stitches can be caused by factors such as needle condition, incorrect needle size, thread tension, machine timing or improper feeding.

Inspect shoulder tape and shoulder reinforcement
Shoulder tape is easy for a buyer to miss because most customers never see it.
Depending on the T-shirt construction, reinforcement may be used along the shoulder seams or from shoulder to shoulder through the back neckline.
Its job is essentially to stabilise parts of the garment that undergo repeated stretching during wearing, washing and hanging.

Is the tape actually present where specified? Is it securely stitched? Is it lying flat? Is it consistent from side to side? Is it distorting the neckline?
Twisted, folded or poorly attached tape can be almost as undesirable as missing reinforcement.
At the same time, don’t assume every good T-shirt must contain shoulder tape.
It is a construction feature, not a universal rule. If the approved sample and tech pack do not specify it, its absence alone should not result in rejection.
Inspect sleeve hems and bottom hems
Hems have a big impact on perceived quality because they are immediately visible.
Start with the sleeve opening.
The hem depth should remain reasonably consistent around each sleeve, and both sleeves should match each other.
Then inspect the bottom hem from one side seam to the other.
Knitted T-shirts commonly use coverstitch-type construction in these areas. On the outside, look for clean and parallel stitch lines. On the reverse, the stitch formation should appear neat and consistent.

Crooked hems, varying hem depth, skipped sections, stretched edges and excessive waviness.
Also examine the point where the bottom hem crosses the side seam.
Several layers of fabric come together here, making it a common location for skipped stitches, feeding problems or bulky stitching.
Check puckering and seam waving
A finished seam should lie reasonably flat when the T-shirt is relaxed.
If the fabric gathers, wrinkles or develops obvious waves immediately alongside the stitch line, you may be looking at seam puckering.

During a T-shirt stitching quality check, inspect the garment both lying flat and hanging naturally. Some types of puckering and rippling are far easier to spot when the T-shirt is hanging.
Test seam strength gently
You can perform a useful basic seam test without special equipment.
Hold the fabric on either side of the seam and apply gentle pressure across the seam.
Watch how much it opens.
If the seam spreads excessively and exposes the joining area, you are seeing what is often called seam grinning.

Remember that “minor”, “major” and “critical” defects should ultimately be defined in your own quality standard.

AQL 2.5 does not mean that you inspect 2.5% of your order.
